The Penguin is an American crime drama television miniseries developed by Lauren LeFranc for HBO. Based on the DC Comics character Penguin, it is a spin-off from the film The Batman (2022) that explores the Penguin's rise to power in Gotham City's criminal underworld. LeFranc serves as the showrunner of the series, which is produced by DC Studios in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Colin Farrell stars as the Penguin, reprising his role from The Batman, alongside Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo, Michael Zegen, Berto Colón, James Madio, Joshua Bitton, David H. Holmes, Daniel J. Watts, Ben Cook, Jayme Lawson, Scott Cohen, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Theo Rossi, Ben Cook, Jayme Lawson, Aleska Palladino, Craig Walker, Tess Soltau, Marié Botha, Michael Kelly and Mark Strong. Development was underway by September 2021, and HBO Max ordered it in March 2022, after The Batman was released. The film's director, Matt Reeves, supervised the writing and was involved in hiring the creative team. Filming began in March 2023 in New York, but was halted in June by the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. Production resumed in late November and concluded in February 2024. The series moved from HBO Max's successor Max to HBO in July 2024. Craig Zobel directed the first three episodes.

The Penguin premiered in the United States on HBO on September 19, 2024, and is set to run for eight episodes until November 10.

"The majority of staff of the streaming service DC Universe has been laid off, as has editor-in-chief Bob Harras and multiple other executives on the publishing side. Monday's WarnerMedia layoffs have affected a significant number of high-level figures at comic book powerhouse DC, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

 

Among those said to be losing their positions are editor-in-chief Bob Harris, senior VP of publishing strategy and support services Hank Kanalz, VP of marketing and creative services Jonah Weiland, VP global publishing initiatives and digital strategy Bobbie Chase, senior story editor Brian Cunningham, and executive editor Mark Doyle, who oversaw the rollout of the Black Label graphic novels. Jim Lee remains the CCO."

Moving forward, both sources believe comics will be just a small part of the necessary intellectual property maintenance needed to keep corporate cash cows like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman humming along.”

“Keep in mind, it wasn’t about whether DC was losing money. Even if it was, it was a small amount. The problem is that the potential profits in comics are negligible when one considers the average summer blockbuster has $200 million-plus budgets. Doom Patrol Season 2 Breakdown and Review [Full Spoilers]

Doom Patrol follows the unlikely heroes of the eponymous team who all received their powers through tragic circumstances and are generally shunned by society. Most members of the team were treated by the Chief, a medical doctor who gave them residence in his mansion to help protect them from the outside world. Their name derives from an earlier Doom Patrol team that was formed by the Chief.

 

The first members of the Doom Patrol to be introduced in the series are Jane, the dominant personality of a traumatized woman with dissociative identity disorder; Rita Farr, who struggles to prevent her body from turning to a gelatinous state; Larry Trainor, who has an entity of negative energy living inside of him; and Cliff Steele, whose brain was placed in a robot body following a car accident. The team is later joined by cybernetically-enhanced superhero Vic Stone.

 

In the first season, the Chief is captured by the malevolent Mr. Nobody, sending the Doom Patrol on a journey to rescue him. Along the way, they discover secrets about themselves and of the Chief, whom they eventually learn is responsible for the tragic events that gave them their powers.

 

First season premiered on February 15, 2019 on DC Universe. In July 2019, the series was renewed for a second season, which is set to premiere on June 25, 2020 on both DC Universe and HBO Max.

 

NYSQ Justice Con Quick Hit Snyder Cut Justice League

Justice Con is being hosted by the Nerd Queens in association with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Ink to the People. The event is completely free and was available to stream on the Justice Con YouTube page and still is available.

Some of the panels featured in the Justice Con schedule, which will took place on July 25 and 26, the same weekend as Comic-Con@home, include spotlights on several of the film's stars and crew, including Darkseid actor Ray Porter, cinematographer Fabian Wagner and director Zack Snyder himself.

 

Zack Snyder's Justice League, or the Snyder Cut as its come to be known thanks to the #releasethesnydercut movement, was announced for HBO Max for early to mid-2021. While many of Snyder's initial ideas were cut from the theatrical version of Justice League, the director said there were "no compromises" made for the upcoming release.

The Best Superhero TV Show Ever

I have never denied my love for Smallville. Not only do I believe that it is the best superhero TV Show of all time, but I think it ranks among the best shows of any kind. This starts, obviously before Clark Kent becomes Superman and takes you on a journey through the early struggles of both developing his powers along with developing his character and relationships. In this multi-part series, I will address why I think the creators, Gough and Millar, did such a good job. Starting with:

Season 1

The pilot episode sets the stage for any series, and this one really nailed it. We see that a young Clark Kent, a freshman in high school, already has and uses some of his powers, such as super speed, but does not know exactly where they came from. In this episode we also see that Clark is already feeling the effects of Kryptonite, although he does not know why. Lana Lang wears a “meteor rock” necklace made from the meteorite that killed her parents, and Clark is weakened by it.

This season is the stage setter for the seasons that followed. It seems apparent that they were not sure if they would be renewed immediately, as season 1 earned the “Freak of the Week” reputation. This simply means that every week’s episode had another person infected by Kryptonite (they called it “meteor rock” until late season 2) and turns evil. Some temporarily and some not.

Clark develops and gets used to the news that he is from another planet and his developing powers as he grows older. For instance, in this season he is completely unaware that he can be shot and not die. However, he does bruise from the shots although they heal quickly. The main focus is on his relationships, both with his parents and with his friends. These are crucial in setting up what is to come. In this we see why he has the morals he does and why he always looks for the best solution with no loss of life. Culminating with a cliff hanger season finale.

The show is excellently cast. Every actor perfectly suited for their role. John Schneider, a favorite of mine from the Dukes of Hazzard, played Jonathan Kent so well, I wanted to be a better father. Michael Rosenbaum played the best Lex Luthor I have ever seen. He took the role and played the subtleties beautifully as a confident businessman, to a slightly insecure friend, and a best friend and older brother type to Clark. Lana Lang is adorably played by Kristin Kreuk, who moves through quite an arc on the first season, starting as the popular cheerleader to the girl next door looking for purpose. Chloe Sullivan, played by Allison Mack, is the Lois Lane type of friend for Clark’s high school years.

Of course, Tom Welling plays Clark Kent. He develops this character so perfectly through the entire run of the show, I don’t think calling him the best Clark Kent is saying too much. He may not be the best Superman, but that is only because he didn’t play Superman.

If you are planning to watch this show, you definitely need to start at the beginning, and this season sets the table for all that is to come. The series opening scene foreshadows events that don’t happen until season 6. It is just so well thought out, I recommend it to everyone.
